Goal: receive VOIP calls at home without a computer (i.e. with a regular phone):
- have regular phone (home phone that plugs into a regular phone jack)
- have internet connection
- get a router that has phone jack (e.g. Linksys RT31P2 http://www.canadianvoipstore.com/product_info.php?products_id=318)
- plug phone into router, plug router into internet connection
- get a VOIP account with a SIP friendly account (e.g. gizmo project: http://www.google.com/gizmo5/)
- note your SIP access number
- tell friends access number
- get friends to look up a local call-in number (e.g. cities all over the world have access numbers: http://www.sipbroker.com/sipbroker/action/pstnNumbers)
- get friend to dial local call-in, then punch in your SIP id, your phone will magically ring
Just leave your voip router connected to your internet connection and it will work. No computer needed. This is completely FREE to receive calls.
Gizmo5, recently acquired by Google, also allows you to make cheap long distance calls (like Skype). So the same phone works to place VOIP long distance calls.
Enjoy,
